Rwanda FDA temporarily suspends import of Alcohol

The Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) has temporarily suspended the importation of Ethanol (Neutral Spirit) used in beverage, pharmaceutical and other manufacturing industries as it carries out a detailed assessment aimed at protecting public health.

The decision was announced on July 31, 2026, under the powers granted to Rwanda FDA by law. The regulator said the temporary measure will remain in force until the ongoing review is completed.

As part of the directive, Rwanda FDA stated that “all previously issued permits for the use of Ethanol or Neutral Spirit are suspended and are no longer valid with immediate effect.” The authority also said it will not accept new applications to import or use the product until further notice.

Rwanda FDA called on manufacturers, importers, distributors and all other stakeholders to comply with the directive, saying the measure is intended to safeguard the health and safety of the public.

The Authority added that it will continue to provide updates on the outcome of the ongoing assessment and any new decisions that may be taken once the review is complete.
