Rayon Sports make winning start to CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign

Rayon Sports kicked off their 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup journey on a positive note after defeating Zanzibar’s KVZ SC 2-0 at Amahoro Stadium, collecting all three points in their opening Group stage match.

The Rwandan side had to wait until the second half to break down a disciplined KVZ SC defense after the opening 45 minutes ended without a goal. Despite creating several attacking opportunities, neither team managed to find the net before the halftime whistle.

Rayon Sports returned from the break with greater intensity and eventually earned a penalty in the 69th minute. Junior Kameni calmly converted from the spot to give the Blues the lead and put them in control of the contest.

KVZ SC attempted to fight back in search of an equalizer, but Rayon Sports remained organized at the back while continuing to threaten on the counterattack. Their persistence paid off late in the game when Daniel Muhoza sealed the victory with a well-taken goal in the 88th minute, ensuring a comfortable 2-0 triumph.

The victory gives head coach Francis Haringingo's side an encouraging start to the regional tournament as they prepare for tougher fixtures in the remaining group matches. Rayon Sports now join Al Hilal SC at the top after the Sudanese side also secured a 2-0 win over Tusker FC in their opening match.

The competition continues on the following matchday with another set of highly anticipated fixtures, including APR FC against Garde Républicaine FC, while Al Hilal SC will face Kenya's Gor Mahia FC in matches expected to shape the race for qualification to the knockout stage.
