Rwanda's economy grows by 10% in first quarter of 2026 as Cabinet highlights strong performance

KIGALI, RwandaRwanda's economy expanded by 10 percent in the first quarter of 2026, driven by strong growth across key sectors including services, industry and agriculture, according to resolutions adopted during a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Paul Kagame on Monday.

The Cabinet said the country's economic performance remained on an upward trajectory despite continued uncertainty in the global economy, with growth supported by increased agricultural production, expansion of industrial activities and improved performance in the services sector.

The government noted that agricultural output increased following higher food production, improved exports of cash crops, wider use of technology in farming and better livestock production, all of which contributed to the country's overall economic growth.

Besides reviewing the economy, the Cabinet approved several draft laws aimed at strengthening development partnerships and expanding access to financing.

Among them is a draft agreement between Rwanda and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) to support the country's technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sector.

Cabinet also endorsed financing agreements between Rwanda and the World Bank to strengthen the country's preparedness and response to public health emergencies through the Global Financing Facility for Women, Children and Adolescents Multi-Donor Trust Fund and the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Multi-Donor Trust Fund.

Another agreement approved by Cabinet will provide additional financing for climate-resilient agriculture and efforts to reduce the impact of climate change on farming. Ministers also endorsed an agreement that will support the implementation of Rwanda's national census programme.

In other decisions, Cabinet approved several ministerial orders fcovering governance and public administration, including regulations governing leaders of national consultative councils, procedures for implementing fiscal digitalisation, the use of technology in tax administration, and mechanisms for ensuring public institutions settle suppliers' invoices within the required timeframe.

Cabinet further approved the appointment of new ambassadors from Sudan and South Korea to Rwanda, as well as the new country representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It also approved the appointment of Jim Hegarty as Rwanda's Honorary Consul in Ireland.

The meeting also received updates on preparations for the 16th National Dialogue Council (Umushyikirano) scheduled for 1–10 August 2026, the 2026 National Service Programme (Itorero Indangamirwa) to be held at the Gabiro Combat Training Centre, and the National Agriculture and Livestock Exhibition, which will take place in Kigali from 22 to 31 August 2026.
