The Ministry of Public Service and Labour (MIFOTRA) has announced that Wednesday, July 1, 2026, and Monday, July 6, 2026, will be public holidays, giving both public and private sector employees two official days off to mark Rwanda's Independence Day and Liberation Day celebrations.
According to a public notice issued by the ministry, Wednesday, July 1, has been designated as a public holiday in celebration of Rwanda's Independence Day, which commemorates the country's attainment of independence.
The ministry further explained that although Liberation Day is celebrated annually on July 4, this year's commemoration falls on a weekend. In line with Rwanda's labour regulations, Monday, July 6, 2026, has therefore been declared a substitute public holiday.
The announcement applies to all employers and employees in both the public and private sectors, who are expected to observe the two official holidays.
The declaration means employees across the country will have two public holidays within the first week of July as Rwanda marks two significant milestones in its history—Independence Day and Liberation Day.
The Ministry of Public Service and Labour urged institutions and employers to take note of the announced holidays and make the necessary arrangements in accordance with the country's labour laws.
