Rwanda is mourning the death of Senator Donatille Mukabalisa, who passed away after a period of illness. She had been receiving medical treatment at King Faisal Hospital in Kigali. Her death has brought sadness to many people, especially those who worked with her in government and politics.
Mukabalisa was one of Rwanda's most experienced political leaders and played an important role in rebuilding the country's institutions after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. During her public service, she held several senior leadership positions, including Member of Parliament, Senator, and Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. She served as Speaker from 2013 to 2024, where she worked to strengthen Parliament, promote gender equality, and expand cooperation with other parliaments in Africa and around the world.
Born on July 30, 1960, in Nyamata, Donatille Mukabalisa began her career with international organizations before joining politics. She worked for the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In 2000, she became a member of Rwanda's Transitional National Assembly. She was elected as a Member of Parliament in 2003, became a Senator in 2011, and later returned to Parliament, where she was elected Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies.
In 2016, Mukabalisa was elected President of the Liberal Party (PL), a position she held until her death. After completing her term as Speaker, she was appointed Senator again in September 2024 and continued serving the country in the Senate. Her family and the relevant authorities are expected to announce funeral arrangements. She leaves behind a legacy of dedicated public service, strong leadership, the promotion of good governance, democracy, and gender equality in Rwanda.
