Rwanda’s Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) has encouraged school leaders and teachers across the country to make good use of the current school holiday by improving their English language skills. The ministry says this will help raise the quality of education and enable teachers to meet the professional standards required in schools.
In a letter issued on 15 July 2026 by the Office of the Minister of State, MINEDUC reminded all school heads that the National English Proficiency Programme is being implemented in partnership with Education First (EF). The programme aims to help every teacher achieve at least a B2 level of English proficiency.
The ministry explained that the two-month holiday, which began on 3 July 2026, provides teachers with enough time to focus on online learning. School leaders have been asked to encourage all teachers who have access to the learning platform to participate actively and strengthen their English communication skills.
According to the guidelines, teachers are expected to attend at least one weekly Group Class (live session) and complete two Self-Study lessons every week. They are also encouraged to use the platform’s AI conversation features regularly to improve their speaking and listening skills.
MINEDUC also reminded teachers that the National English Proficiency Programme is being implemented over a period of two years only until 2028. After this period, all English training efforts will solely focus on pre-service. The ministry therefore called on teachers and school leaders to take full advantage of this opportunity while it is still available and continue working toward the expected English proficiency level.
